Motivates others: Working as a public leader entails working with public employees who often carry a heavy workload. As a leader, it is important to foster a supportive atmosphere in the workplace by continuously encouraging and motivating them. Verbal reinforcements and encouragements would be helpful. An inspiring environment will encourage them to keep going despite the challenges in the workplace.

Thinks critically: A great public leader is an effective decision maker and problem solver. He or she also comes up with creative ideas for projects and devises sensible solutions. A great public leader advocates careful analysis and evaluation before implementing policies and decisions.

Communicates effectively: Communication is a two-way street; it involves both talking and listening. A good public leader listens well to the needs and concerns of his or her constituency and communicates issues clearly to concerned parties. A great leader also embraces the same practice with his or her team. Fostering an inclusive and open environment in the workplace will inspire workers to express their creativity and will also lead them to work more efficiently.

Strikes a balance between a sense of urgency and resiliency: In the field of public governance, change is constant; resources get depleted and budgets get cut, among others. The key to facing these challenges and devising reasonable solutions is to develop a sense of urgency while demonstrating a positive attitude. No plan can be attained with a negative mindset.
